A fascination with ancient Egypt led Amelia B. Edwards (1831-1892) to found the Egypt Exploration Fund (now the Egypt Exploration Society), establish the first professorships of Egyptology at University College London, and to donate her extensive collection to the Petrie Museum—all of which earned her the moniker, “Godmother of Egyptology.” An advocate of women’s rights, she served as the vice president of the Society for Promoting Women’s Suffrage and formed deep, romantic relationships with women. In 2016, Historic England designated her grave as a landmark in
English LGBT history.
