E. Nesbit

Heralded as “the first modern writer for children,” Edith Bland—better known as E. Nesbit (1858-1924)—is credited with centering children’s adventure stories on tough truths which had previously been the domain of adult literature. She published over forty books for children, including novels, storybooks, and picture books, and collaborated with other authors on almost forty additional books. Although Edith was the primary bread winner in her family, believed women to be just as capable as men, forgave her husband his numerous affairs, and even adopted his children out of wedlock, she was not a champion of women’s suffrage. A devote socialist, she claimed that because women could vote Tory, they could also hurt the Socialist cause.
