Fred M. White was born in West Bromwich, England, sometime during the June quarter of 1859. Though he started working as a solicitor’s clerk, by 1891 he was employed fulltime as a journalist and author. Extremely prolific during his forty-some year career, he published about 400 short stories and more than 100 novels. Known for his six “Doom of London” science fiction stories published in 1903 (“The Four Days’ Night,” “The Dust of Death,” “The Four White Days,” “The Invisible Force,” “The River of Death,” and “A Bubble Burst”), it appears that our selection, “The Balance of Nature,” published 4 years later, should be considered part of that series too. A number of his later works seem to have been influenced by his two sons’ service in WWI. At the age of 76, he died in Barnstaple, England, in 1935, sometime during the month of December.
