Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen was born near Kingston, Canada, on February 24, 1848. His first books were on scientific subjects, and include Physiological Æsthetics (1877) and Flowers and Their Pedigrees (1886). Between 1884 and 1899, Allen produced nearly 30 novels. His scandalous novel, The Woman Who Did (1895), became a bestseller. Allen died on October 25, 1899, at his home on Hindhead, Haslemere, Surrey, England. A festival celebrating Canadian mystery fiction is held every year on Wolfe Island near Kingston, Canada.
