Herbert George Wells was born in Bromley, England, on September 21, 1866. At age 8, his love of literature began when, while recovering from a broken leg, he started reading books. He is—along with Jules Verne and J.-H. Rosny aîné—one of the three great fathers of science fiction. Some of his most famous works are The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898). Wells died in London on August 13, 1946, and three days later his ashes were scattered at sea.
