Kate Chopin

Of French-Creole descent, Kate Chopin (1850-1904) was an American author of short stories and novels set in Louisiana. She wrote over 100 short stories and novels, publishing in Youth’s Companion, Harper’s Young People, Vogue, The New York Times, and The Atlantic. Critics of the time often considered her works immoral due to their overt themes of female sexuality and rebuking of gender roles and norms. She based many of her stories on her life in Louisiana and portrayed women as individuals with separate wants and needs. Rediscovered in the 1960s and 1970s,
Kate’s work is now considered a forerunner to feminist activism and the sexual revolution. While never identifying as a feminist nor suffragette, she never doubted a woman’s ability to be strong.
