Marie Belloc Lowndes

Marie Adelaide Belloc Lowndes (1868-1947) published over twelve nonfiction books and more than forty novels, mainly well-plotted mysteries occasionally based on real-life crimes. She had a reputation for combining exciting incidents with psychological realism to explore the emotional, spiritual, and mental lives of her characters. Four of her novels were adapted into films, one into an opera, and two for radio dramas. Her most famous novel, The Lodger, was based on Jack the Ripper and adapted for the screen by directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Maurice Elvey, John Brahm, and David Ondaatje.
