Mary Shelley

A child of revolutionaries and the wife of an avowed atheist, it’s no surprise that Mary Shelley (1797-1851) is also the author of Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus, the novel that ushered in the modern science fiction genre. Her prolific works included short stories, novels, travelogues, collected letters, and biographies, although she considered herself primarily a novelist. Contemporary critics consistently misunderstood and dismissed the political edge to her stories. In contrast to the Age of Enlightenment’s ideals, Mary’s works illustrated that irresponsible use of power would lead to chaos. She is remembered as a major figure in the Romantic movement, significant for her literary achievement and political voice.
