J.S. Fletcher

Joseph Smith Fletcher was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England, on February 7, 1863. He began working as journalist at age 20, and started cranking out books and stories like mad—first poetry, then historical fiction, and finally detective fiction. Ultimately, he produced more than 230 books, including over one hundred detective novels.

Along the way, however, he did produce a few works of science fiction. At least two, The Three Days’ Terror (1901) and our selection, deal with London’s partial destruction. On January 30, 1935, at the age of 71, he died in Surrey, England.
